Director
After studying film, Richard Jutras debuted at Vidéographe as a director, as well as a musician and soundtrack designer. Since then, he has worked actively as a director, screenwriter and editor. He has made eight short productions in five years. His most recent is Rendez-vous dans l'inachevé, a 28-minute film with no dialogue, where the action unfolds over the backdrop of war.
Several of his productions, like Biscuit soda (1984), Kid Kodak (1992), Musiques pour un siècle sourd (1999), Pawn Shop (2001), Flagrant délit (2001), Hit and Run (2002) and Nul si découvert (2004), have merited awards and special mentions, or were presented at festivals here and abroad. Hit and Run won the 2003 Jutra for best short, and the 2002 Bayard D'or for best short at the Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur in Belgium. It also stood among the finalists at the Genies that year and was in international competition at the Festival internazionale del film in Locarno, Switzerland, the Festival International du Court Métrage in Clermont-Ferrand, France, as well as in more than a dozen other festivals around the world. Hit and Run enjoyed a special presentation for the international press at the Prix Lumières gala in Paris. It was also included at the Festival des scénaristes de La Ciotat and the opening night festivities of the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto.
Jutras's medium-length documentary, Musiques pour un siècle sourd, won the 2000 Rogers Communications Media Award for Coverage of the Arts, the 1999 Prix Opus for media event of the year, given by the Conseil québécois de la musique; four Gémeau nominations in 1999, most notably for best documentary production. And, in March, 1998, it was in official selection at the 16th Festival International du Film sur l'Art in Montréal.
Kid Kodak, a medium-length drama, won special jury mention at the Festival International du Nouveau Cinéma et de la Vidéo in 1992; the Golden Sheaf Award for best drama and for best editing, all categories, at the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival in 1993.
Among Jutras's works in progress are Turbulences magnétiques, a feature-length documentary on the world of contemporary music, and La belle empoisonneuse, a dramatic feature, currently in editing, due for release in the fall of 2007.
